15 Important Tips
- Utilize ALL your space, pack drawers of furniture, trunks of cars, holding space within appliances, trash cans, buckets, pots and spaces below and above larger items.
- Cover mattresses and store them flat on a level surface.
- Use protective covers for wood items and consider treating the wood before storage.
- Pack books flat, not end to end, to avoid damaging the spines. Remember, books are extremely heavy so do not pack too many in one box; consider using smaller boxes to avoid over packing.
- Do not over pack boxes, overfilled boxes will break. Avoid leaving spaces within boxes, fill spaces with clothes, towels, and newspaper or paper towel so the boxes won’t crush when they are stacked.
- Use shelving to take full advantage of the space.
- Store items you will most likely need access to first at the front of the unit.
- When packing a unit try to create an aisle or aisles to maintain access to your items.
- Store couches on end except for sleepers.
- Label delicate and fragile items and consider using bubble wrap to protect them.
- If you are storing temperature sensitive items like artwork, antiques, photos or videos, consider using a climate controlled unit to avoid damage.
- Do NOT store flammables, fuels, ammunition, paints, animals or perishables.
- Drain machinery like lawn mowers and weed whackers to avoid damage and prevent corrosion.
- Store at your own risk or consider getting a lock box for high value items, such as securities, jewelry, furs, guns, original artwork and personal or sensitive information.
- Have all clothing, linins and drapes cleaned, pressed and dried before packing and consider sealing them in air tight bags to prevent damage and to save space.
