A Note on Self Storage Insurance

Deciding if you should insure your items is a personal choice.  Just like any other optional insurances out there you need to determine if the cost of the items is worth the cost of the insurance.  However, there are a few things to keep in mind when you decide to or not to insure your storage items.

  1. What type of insurance does the storage facility have?
    1. What types of events are covered under their insurance and how much compensation are you entitled to?
  2. Are you storing your items in an area prone to natural disaster i.e. floods, hurricanes or fires?
  3. Does the storage facility require you to sign a waiver?  This often means that if something happens to your unit or lot, even if the facility is directly responsible, they are not liable for the damage to your items.
  4. Are you storing high value items such as a vehicle, boat, electronics or antiques?
    1. If you are storing items like this consider insuring just those items.
  5. Are your items sentimental or expensive because no matter how much insurance you have you will never be able to replace photographs or heirlooms?

Finally, remember to research the facility you are planning to store your items at.  Make sure they have a good track record and maintain a safe, secure and clean facility.  Also, choose the proper type of insurance, if you have antiques, collector’s items, personal memorabilia contribute to their safety by investing in a climate controlled unit.
